Parts and score. The instrumentation varies between two piccoli and two flutes, three flutes and an alto and four flutes.
It's like onomatopoeia, entertaining but not easy to play. We liked it. the first two flutes have to change to Piccolo in several movements (always both of them), the fourth changes to Alto in the other movements. Everybody will need frullato to play this!

Hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Sozusagen ein Charakterbild der verschiedenen Flöten. Die Piccolo, die oben rumjubiliert, ein bisschen infantil und übermütig, die Flöte in der Mitte schon etwas ruhiger aber immer noch brillant und dann die Alt im Keller als Ruhepol. Nett.

Erstes Werk von Haas, das auch international Erfolg hatte.
Entstanden im Jahr 1929. Vermischt Elemente der mährischen Volkslieder mit Choralmelodik und Synagogen-Gesängen. Dazu kommt Polyrhythmik.
Rezension aus dem Neuen Wiener Tagblatt von 1935: Das Bläserquintett von Pavel Haas ist ein durchaus ernst zu nehmendes Werk, das sich durch Originalität der Thematik sowie durch wirkungsvolle Beherrschung der Satztechnik auszeichnet.
Uraufführung am 24. März 1930 durch das Mährische Bläserquintett. Erstausgabe 1934 in Prag (Sadlo).

This one of only a few compositions the composer was able to take with him on his flight from Hungary to Austria. Written between 1951 and 1953. This is a part of the Musica ricercata for piano (eleven movements in total). Each movement adds one note of the chromatic scale.

Ausgesprochen kompliziert, sogar in Sachen Notation. Alle Stimmen sind mit schriftlichen Anweisungen rund um den Notentext gespickt.
Komponiert im Dezember 1968. Ausgehend von der Idee, für jedes der fünf Instrumente einen konzertanten Satz zu schreiben, wuchs die Form während der Arbeit, so dass am Ende 10 Sätze standen, wobei nach jedem solistischen Satz ein Ensemble-Stück eingeschoben wird.
Der letzte Satz endet mit einer zehn Sekunden langen Generalpause und einem Zitat aus dem Roman "Alice im Wunderland" von Lewis Caroll.

Der erste Walzer ist für Klarinette mit Klavier, der zweite für Flöte und Klavier, der Dritte für Flöte, Klarinette und Klavier, der vierte ebenfalls, nur dass die Flöte hier zur Piccolo wechselt.
Seltsames, glattes Papier und Druck. So glatt, dass es bei künstlicher Beleuchtung spiegelt. Nicht sehr geistreich. Vermutlich schreibt da auch ein Bleistift schlecht drauf.
Der Pianopart ist so eigentlich nicht spielbar, weil der Pianist für das Da capo fünf Seiten zurückblättern muss. Schade, dass Verlage sowas nicht überlegen.
Bei aller Kritik an der Ausgabe ist die Musik aber sehr spielenswert.

Von Schostakowitsch unter den Eindrücken der zerstörten Stadt Dresden nach einem dortigen Besuch im Jahr 1960 innerhalb von nur 3 Tagen komponiert. Dies wissend erklärt sich die finstere Stimmung des Werkes.
Beim ersten Blattspiel nicht so überzeugend. Ich glaube aber, es wäre mehr Erforschung wert.

I found this one on a recording by Gudrun Hinze. The music and the recording are so catching that I bought sheet music for piccolo and played piccolo on my choice (normally a no go). Really something special.
