Born in Nagyszentmiklos (today Romania). First piano lessons from his mother.
1891
First public concert playing piano and also compositions of his own
1899
Studies at Budapest conservatory (piano and composition)
1905
First educational journey to collect Hungarian folkmusic.
1907
Piano professorship in Budapest
1913
After expanding the folksong collection on Czech Republic and Romania follows a trip to Northern Africa for the same purpose
1940
Emigration to the USA
Honorary doctor at Columbia University, otherwise little recognition
26.09.1945
Dies shortly before his return to New York of undernourishment and leukemia
