Born in Ciboure, the family moves to Paris in the same year.

First lessons in piano, composition and music theory
1886
Lessons in music theory.
1889
Studies with Faure and Chabrier at the Paris conservatory, but will never graduate
1914
Composition of the piano suite Le Tombeau de Couperin, which he orchestrated himself and which was also published in several editions for woodwind quintet later on. Each movement is dedicated to a different friend of Ravel who gave his live in war.
1920
Many concert tours through Europe
1928
Honorary doctor of the University of Oxford and composition of Bolero
Worked together with Strawinskij for the instrumentation of an opera of Mussorgskij.
28.12.1937
Dies in Paris
He was one of first composers to use the whole flute family in the orchestra (flute, piccolo and alto flute)

Wurde im Studio aufgenommen, klingt aber nach einem Hallraum wie in der Kirche. Seltsamerweise kommt die Flöte dabei ganz aus der Ferne. Irritiert mich beim Hören. "Romantisch" im Titel ist wohl nicht musikhistorisch gemeint, sonst hätten Gluck und Mozart da nix verloren.
