Born in Copenhagen son of the flutist Christian Joachim Andersen.

First flute lessons from the father

1852

His younger brother Vigo, later on a flutist, too, is born

1860

First public concerts as a soloist

1869

Member of the Royal chapel in Copenhagen under Gade

1877

Move to St. Petersburg, flutist in the orchestra of the tsar

1881

Flutist in important orchestras in Germany, Denmark and St. Petersburg

1882

Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra in Berlin (later on the Berliner Philharmoniker) until 1891. He was a co-founder of the orchestra. He was playing under conductors like Brahms, Grieg, Strauss and Tschaikowsky. He became one of the most beloved soloists of the orchestra.

In Berlin he was flute teacher of Prill, Ary van Leuwen and others

Due to an illness of the tongue end of the flute career

End of his engagement at the Philharmonic Orchestra due to his ongoing disability

Conductor of the court orchestra in Copenhagen

1895

Conductor of the Palais concertos in Copenhagen, founded by himself.

Founder of a school for learning to play in a orchestra

Organisator and conductor of the publich open air concerts in Copenhagen

1904

Taffanel refers to him as "Chopin of the flute"

1905

Elected member of the military music commission

Wrote 188 etudes for flute and 54 compositions for flute and piano

18.09.1905

Receives the Knight's cross of the Danebrog order from the king

07.05.1909

Dies in Copenhagen
